Our Mission

The mission of Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County is to create connection and enrich the lives of older and isolated adults so that they may live independently through nutrition, social engagement and community services.

Our Story

Since its incorporation in 1977, Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County has supplied 15,969,000 meals and services, all dedicated to upholding our mission to create connection and enrich the lives of older and isolated adults so that they may live independently through nutrition, social engagement and community services.

Originally named St. Joseph Community Services, Inc. based out of Merrimack, NH, friendly Meals on Wheels drivers provided 149,338 meals and wellness checks in our first year. Today, more than 380,000 meals are enjoyed in the security of one’s own home or in the welcoming halls of nearby community sites or local restaurants

In 2020, St. Joseph Community Services, Inc. officially adopted the national branding of Meals on Wheels, bringing awareness to this mission at a time when whole communities were at the greatest risk of succumbing to loneliness and isolation. The closure of many community dining spaces forced providers to innovate creative solutions to this crisis. In 2021, the Dine Out Club program launched—the only one of its kind in NH--whereby older adults can visit a Meals on Wheels partner restaurant at a time of their choosing to order from a healthy menu. Most importantly, these diners create new memories with fellow participants and re-connect with their community.

The popularity of the Dine Out Club inspired older adults to come back to congregate dining settings. Today, dozens of Community Dining lunches are held each month at community halls throughout the entire county; no matter where an older adult lives, they can get to at least one lunch within 20 minutes of their home. Some locations, like Nashua’s Senior Activity Center, host lunch most weekdays!

In 2023, against the backdrop of rising food prices, Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County embarked on a transformational operation to source and distribute more than 8,000 meals per week by centralizing operations through a warehouse in Manchester, NH. Located on the site of the historic Blake’s Restaurant and Creamery, the factory where the Blake family once produced milk for delivery now stores thousands of meals (and milk!) that go right back out to those who need them most in the two most populous cities of NH, as well as 29 surrounding towns.

Today, more than 5,000 individuals enjoy the nutritional and social benefits of our programs, including hundreds of veterans, retired workers, and even several homebound adults (between the ages of 18 and 59) who qualify for Meals on Wheels due to income and disability limitations. This impact is only possible through the goodwill of community partners who donate their time or treasure to ensure no older adult is left on a waiting list. Also, corporate and non-profit partners help stretch resources to serve the evolving needs of a growing population, and public servants advocate for Meals on Wheels to receive critical funding as an essential service.

The staff and volunteers are dedicated to promoting better physical, mental, and social well-being for older and other qualified adults. Providing nutritious meals, health education, opportunities for social interaction, and other related services helps improve health outcomes, maintain community engagement, and ensure that no one in the neighborhoods of Hillsborough County needs to sacrifice their independence to attain their most basic needs.
